My connection to SGC Foodservice runs deep, spanning decades, thanks to my dad. From an early age, I learned how family-oriented the company is. They genuinely care about their employees, shown through events like family days at Silver Dollar City, Grill Boxes for three of the major holidays, monthly food trucks, and various rewards and recognition for dedication. When I saw an opportunity to intern at such a great place, I was excited to be a part of it.
During my internship, I focused primarily on the Accounting Department. I learned how to pull all necessary paperwork to calculate variances from invoices and receivers. When working with accounts receivable, I learned how to do a check run and how to scan them into the system. The teams I worked with showed grace and respect and were always willing to answer my questions and help me understand the processes.
My main projects involved analyzing payable trends by examining changes in payment totals, discounts taken, and other relevant metrics on a year-over-year basis. This analysis provided valuable insights into potential changes that could increase profit and identify areas of financial loss. It was fascinating to see how creating reports from different data sets can help a company save money. Additionally, I assisted with their weekly bank reconciliation and pulling data for their auditing process. I learned just how much work goes into these processes and how to do them efficiently.
What sets this internship apart is the opportunity to explore the other departments within SGC. This holistic approach allowed me to observe how various parts of the company function and collaborate. I gained a deeper appreciation for each role in SGC’s operations and how each person contributes to the overall mission by working together. During the time I was shadowing sales, I gained firsthand experience and a better understanding of how we gain and maintain an array of customers. We visited a few customers and figured out what they needed from us to be successful. Getting to see each part of the process in person was beneficial to understanding what I was looking at when I worked in the accounting department.
This internship has been a valuable experience, providing me with a deeper understanding of the inner workings of a company's accounting department. It was rewarding to apply the knowledge from my accounting classes to real-world projects. This experience has also expanded my knowledge and will be beneficial for my future coursework and career. While I already knew SGC Foodservice was a great company from my childhood, seeing firsthand how much they care for their employees has reinforced my admiration for them. I am very grateful to have gotten the opportunity to work for them.
